Some people have been asking for information about Bilingualism and Intellectual Disability. We are looking for reliable information that we could put on the website or a link to an association we could refer them to.

I just finished an article about bilingualism and cognitive development.Early studies believed bilingualism had detrimental effects on children’s cognitive development, such as weaker linguistic skills, mental confusion, lower IQ scores, academic retardation, and etc.

With increasing attention to testing criteria and content, in more recent years scientists have overwhelmingly concluded that bilingualism per se does not have any negative effects on cognition. Instead, the opposite increasingly appears to be the case; that high levels of bilingualism have accelerating effects on children’s cognitive development.

I am French and my husband Irish and we have 3 children.
The problem we have, is that our eldest son had glue ear, detected (quite late)at the age of 5, he'll be 6 next July.
He was in the French school, and we could see that his French and English were not very good. Either his communication with the other children.
Since we brought him to an ear consultant, the situation has improved dramatically.
The grommets made a huge difference, but he's catching up at the moment with the two languages...
Did you ever have cases like this?

Anybody out there with bilingual or multilingual child/children and SLI? what has your experience been? Did you feel you received good support from the school environment? How effective was therapy for your child?
And lastly, did this affect your opinion on bilingualism/multilingualism?

Would really like to share experience with parents in this case as this is all new to us and I am finding difficult to find relevant information, or other parents in my area with this specific difficulty.
Thanks a mil!
